Ruth A. Sweeney, 70, of Old Orchard Beach, formerly of Newcastle, passed away on May 9 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass.
Born April 24, 1937, she was the daughter of George and Mary (McCormack) Carter.
Together with her husband, the late Charles Sweeney, she lived in Southborough, Mass. from 1960-1992 before retiring to Newcastle in 1992. She moved to Old Orchard Beach in 2005.
Mrs. Sweeney worked for many years at Marlborough Hospital in Massachusetts, and volunteered at Pine Point Nursing Home in Scarborough and Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
She was an avid gardener and loved to cook.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Sweeney, Jr. in 2004.
She is survived by three children, Charles A. Sweeney III and wife Barbara of Englewood, Fla., Patricia Sweeney of Bellingham, Mass., and Debi Willoughby and husband Ed of Uxbridge, Mass.; three step-grandchildren; and sister, Nora Tompkins and husband Art of Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Visitation held Mon., May 14 at Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.
Funeral Mass 11 a.m., Tues., May 15 at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle.
