Ruth I. Hodgdon, 87, of Porter, formerly of Falmouth, passed away on May 26. She was born in Falmouth on May 2, 1922, to Lawrence and Alice (Lund) Iverson. She graduated from Falmouth High School. Ruth was employed by American Can Company during WWII.
In 1941, she married Norman B. Hodgdon. While raising their six children in Falmouth, she was the bookkeeper for Hodgdon’s Gulf Service Station in Yarmouth. In later years she joined her husband at the station, pumping gas and checking oil in the time of the full service station. She also made beautiful wedding cakes.
Her passions included cake decorating, collecting angels, Bible study, genealogy, and family gatherings. Ruth was proud of her Danish ancestry and passed on her love for Danish food and tradition to her children and grandchildren. She, along with the other “Kissin’ Cousins,” started the Lund Family Reunion 29 years ago.
Ruth was baptized, confirmed, married and was a lifelong active member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Falmouth, holding many offices in the ELCW. In 2006 she received the Grace Award for outstanding service to the church community.
In 1998 Ruth and her husband moved to Porter. She made Riverside Methodist Church her new church home, joining a Bible study group and making many new friends in Christ.
Ruth is predeceased by her parents, brother, Lawrence Iverson and sister, Minnie (Iverson) Erb.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 67 years; their six children, Susan E. Higgins of South Portland, Juliane and James Chard of Brunswick, Peter Hodgdon and Dundee Pratt of Norway, Daniel and Wendy Hodgdon of Porter, Laurel DeRitter of Wiscasset and Alicia Ruth Hodgdon of LaHabra, Cal.; 10 grandchildren, Steven H. Higgins, Mark and Tristan Tanner, Annie and Elise Hodgdon, David, Catherine and Michael Hodgdon, Emilie and Jeffrey DeRitter; brother, Richard Peterson; and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial visitation 6-8 p.m., Mon., June 1 at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. Memorial service 4 p.m., Tues., June 2 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Falmouth. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery in Boothbay at a later time.
