Ruth Edmands Pope, 93, of Round Pond, died March 10.
She was the daughter of Isaac R. Edmands and Ruth Winthrop (Emmons) Edmands. Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., she was raised in Brookline and Marblehead, Mass. After high school she attended the Boston Fine Arts Museum School and the Art Students’ League in New York City where she studied sculpture under William Zorach.
She lived, and raised her family, in North Conway, N.H. in the 1950’s and 60’s, where she ran the Eastern Slope Ski Club’s Junior Ski Program for several years. She moved to Aspen, Col. in 1968, then to Newcastle in 1979. The last two years she has resided in Round Pond under the wonderful care of JoNancy and Earl Inman.
In addition to sculpting with clay, wood and stone, Ruth was physically active: she loved horses, tennis, hiking, skiing and above all sailing. She was also involved in community projects and politics, and did volunteer work with the Red Cross, local hospitals and teaching art to school children.
Ruth was predeceased by her former husband Murray Pope in 1994.
She is survived by her children David Pope of Wiscasset, Cynthia White of Sandwich, N.H., and Russell Pope of Newmarket, N.H.; four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial service 10:30 a.m., April 5 at the Universalist Unitarian Meeting House at the Edgecomb Town Hall.
