Sandra J. Hilton, 73, of Nobleboro, passed away on the morning of Nov. 17 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Born on Aug. 16, 1944, she was the daughter of Thyrle and Beatrice (Berry) Spencer.
Sandra grew up in Damariscotta and Newcastle, attending local schools and graduating from Lincoln Academy in 1962. Upon finishing high school, she went to work for the First National Grocery Store in Damariscotta, where she worked as a cashier and in the meat department for many years.
After First National closed, she worked at several other grocery stores before starting a 25-year career with Renys. She started working in Renys warehouse for about four years before being promoted to become the manager of both in-town Renys locations. She served as manager for over 20 years before retiring in 2006.
In her younger years, she was an avid golfer and played in the local women’s softball league. She enjoyed watching game shows, soap operas, laying in the sun, and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert “Bobby” Hilton; and brother, Howard Spencer.
She is survived by sons, Michael Lessner of Nobleboro, and Andrew Lessner and wife Sarah of Waldoboro; sisters, Beverly Dolloff of Bremen, and Donna Jolicoeur of Walpole; brother, Edsel Spencer of Louisiana; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wed., Nov. 22 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta with the Rev. Richard Newell officiating. She will be laid to rest privately in the Pine Knoll Cemetery in Newcastle.
