Sara E. “Sally” Haines, 91, passed away peacefully at Cove’s Edge Nursing Home on Aug. 18.
The daughter of Barton and Louise (Johnson) Emery, she was born in Northampton, Mass. on Jan. 19, 1916.
Following her public education, in Holliston, Mass., Sally earned her Master’s Degree in nursing at Simmons College. For most of her career, she worked as a nurse practitioner at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Mass. while residing in Lexington, Mass.
Upon her retirement, Sally came to Damariscotta where she became passionate about her community. She was a longtime volunteer at Miles Memorial Hospital where she served on the Planning Board, the Secret Garden, and was a certified hospice volunteer. Sally was a lifelong volunteer with the American Red Cross, a member of the Garden Club, and the Newcastle Park Garden Committee. She was an active member of the Second Congregational Church where she served as a deaconess, was on the music committee, and was a member of the church choir.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Reuben Haines in 1973; son, William Haines in 1986; and sister, Betty in 2006.
Sally leaves her two sons, David Haines and wife Regina of Belchertown, Mass., and John Haines of Damariscotta; and nephews, Paul and Charles Atwood.
Service to celebrate her life 1 p.m., Fri., Aug. 24 at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, with Rev. Ken Dale officiating. She will be laid to rest in Holliston, Mass.
