Sara H. Fergusson, 89, of Whitefield, passed away from natural causes in her home on Nov. 5, surrounded by family and close friends.
She was born in Berkley, Cal., on May 1, 1917, the daughter of Jugertha Melnot Hahn and DeGrace Witter. She had a brother, Witter DeVere Hahn.
Sara attended the University of Arizona where she studied geology, then Stanford University where she majored in German and Literature, and finally graduated from Berkley in 1941.
She married Eugene Stuart Fergusson in 1945.
Sara was a devoted wife, talented gardener, and a passionate homemaker and mother who enjoyed cooking, knitting, and sewing. She read voraciously, worked with stained glass, and practiced calligraphy.
She loved nature, and she and her husband were instrumental in obtaining Tree Farm status for the family property in Whitefield.
She was active in her church and provided many floral arrangements over the years for
church services and other functions. She was active in AARP until her health interfered.
Sara suffered from arthritis most of her life and will be remembered for her determination in the face of difficulty, and the joy and intensity with which she approached life.
She is survived by her son, George S. Fergusson and daughter, Sara J. Fergusson, both of Whitefield; grandchildren, Colin and Elizabeth Fergusson; and niece, Sylvia Hahn, who lives in California.
Memorial service 10 a.m., Sat., Nov. 18 at St. Giles Episcopal Church, Rt. 126, Jefferson.
