Sarah (Sally) Whitney, 93, formerly of Damariscotta, passed away July 19, of natural causes, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Following the death of her father John Upton in 1978, Sally retired from her job at Scholastic Book Services in Massachusetts. She moved to Damariscotta to care for her mother Eleanor Upton and share her home.
An avid gardener and reader, she also enjoyed birding and knitting and was devoted to her grandchildren Michael, Mariah, and Benn. Sally was an opinionated and out-spoken Yankee, always willing to share her point of view. She was a strong advocate for local businesses and embraced the friendly atmosphere of shopping “downtown” within her walking distance. Her good friends included her longstanding tennis group and her neighbor Rose.
In the fall of 2013 she moved to Brownfield to live with her son Jonathan Whitney and his wife Mardi Freeman in their home. In March this year she moved to Merriman House in No. Conway to the delight of the dedicated staff.
A private service is planned for spring 2016 at the family grave in Harrington Cemetery.
