Sarah ‘Sally’ Wilcox Roberts, 100, of Friendship, died peacefully May 14 following an extended stay at Riverside in Damariscotta.
Born in North Attleboro, Mass., July 14, 1916, she was the daughter of Clark H. and Manette Pope Wilcox. Educated in Hudson, Mass., she was a 1933 graduate of Hudson High School. Following high school Sally attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1937. While at UMass, Sally met Louis Everett Roberts, a fellow student who was two years her senior. The two hit it off and were married on Nov. 9, 1940 in Hudson, Mass.
Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Roberts enlisted in the U.S. military and while he was deployed during WWII, Sally began a job in Washington, D.C. for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as a claims examiner. With her college degree she earned $14 per week. Upon Mr. Roberts’ return, the couple made their home in Virginia where they raised their family. After retiring, Sally and Louis moved to Maine in 1980. Settling in Friendship, they were able to be close to their son and grandchildren, as well as Mr. Roberts’ family.
Always one to be active, Sally kept her keen wit and sharp mind by taking courses each semester at the Senior College in Rockland, driving her car and using a computer, well into her 90s. She enjoyed researching family genealogy on the computer and always kept gardens and house plants around her home. Over the years she has enjoyed being part of the local book club. Sally has been the holder of the Friendship Boston Post Cane from April 25, 2011 until her passing.
She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Everett Roberts in 2003; daughter, Ann Roberts Nelson in 1981; sister, Catherine Withington; and daughter-in-law, Beverly Roberts in October 2010.
Sally is survived by son, Rit Roberts of Friendship; grandchildren, Stephen Roberts and wife Annette, and Nathan ‘Nate’ Roberts and wife Jessica; as well as great-grandchildren, Jason, Melinda, Nathan, Emma and Zoe Roberts.
Sally’s family has chosen to remember her life privately.
