Sayward (Pete) Newton Hall III-Stone, 54, of Thomaston, died Sept. 23 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. He was on his way home when he suddenly collapsed upon finishing his work week. Pete was born Aug. 28, 1956 in Fort Rucker, Ala. to Sayward N. Hall Jr. and Mary Cowhig Hall. Pete lived his life devoted to his wife, children and grandson.
He was a strong advocate of family, having always done all that he was able to let his mother, his siblings, and his wife and children know that he was their defender, and protector, and that the door to his home was always open. Pete had a passion for softball and soccer and SCUBA diving. He served seven and a half years in the Army, following the footsteps of his father, and leading the way for his son. Upon completing his military career, Pete came home to Thomaston in 1990 and lived out his other dream and passion of restaurant ownership. He and his wife, Valerie, purchased the Dip Net Restaurant in Port Clyde and operated the business for three years before selling and moving into the sea urchin industry, and finally, Pete ventured into new waters in the boat industry, learning a new trade from the ground up.
Pete’s greatest joy in more recent years was the knowledge that his children had found their way in the world and had become the passionate and kind and responsible adults he’d raised them to be, moving on in their careers and in their individual lives. His grandson, Sayward, completed his family and the two of them were inseparable.
He shared with his wife, Valerie, the sanctuary of their backyard, gardening, and greeting the pairs of birds that returned throughout the seasons, and the incredible views of the rising sun and full moon, and a passion for traveling – often times just getting into the car and heading into exploration without destination. They shared an unusual connectedness in their 29 years of marriage, one that had become melted into each other’s hearts and minds over the last several years, and one that found them to be each other’s soul mates and forever dependable best friends.
Pete was predeceased by his father, Major Sayward N. Hall Jr., who was killed in action in Vietnam, and by his niece, Carolyn Marie Hall-Stone.
Pete is survived by his wife, Valerie Zocher Hall-Stone of Thomaston; son, 1st Lt. Sayward N. Hall IV and wife Mariel of Portland; daughter, Gretel Johanna Hall-Stone of Thomaston; mother, Mary C.
