Shirley E. Osier, 91, of New Harbor, passed away on the morning of Jan. 23 at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Facility in Damariscotta. Born in Portland on Jan. 5, 1922, she was the daughter of William and Daisy (Mears) Kempton.
Shirley grew up and attended schools in Cape Elizabeth, before moving to Pemaquid Harbor where she graduated from Bristol High School in 1939. After graduation, she attended the Golden School of Beauty Culture in Portland.
She worked as a beautician for many years. During her time as a beautician, she worked at Gilberts Beauty Salon, the Beauty Salon at Rines Department Store, and on Sundays she would do hair at the Black Point Inn in Scarborough.
In 1956, she married Leonard Osier. The couple lived in Thomaston for four years before making New Harbor their permanent home. She and Leonard would go on to become the proprietors of Harborside Cottages in New Harbor, a job they enjoyed doing together.
Shirley loved people and enjoyed nothing more than socializing with anyone over a cup of coffee. She could often be found in local coffee shops before sunrise, talking it up with the fishermen. She would go home for a few hours, only to return to talk to the noontime crowd as well. Above all, she loved her children and grandchildren, and cherished every moment she got to spend with them.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Robert Kempton.
She is survived by her loving husband, Leonard Osier of New Harbor; children, Donald Vigue and wife Barbara of Brunswick, and Belinda Osier and husband Chuck Rand of Falmouth; brother, Russell Kempton and wife Patty; grandchildren, Peter Vigue, Seth Vigue, Jesse Aicher, Toby Aicher, and Benjamin Aicher; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A time to visit with the family, over a cup of coffee, 10-11 a.m., Sat., Jan. 26 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. A funeral will follow at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest in the New Harbor Cemetery in the spring.
