Siegfried “Walter” Oesterlin, 77, of Cushing, passed away June 9 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
Walter was born May 29, 1931 in New York City, N.Y., a son of the late Ernst and Gertrude Sakmann Oesterlin. He attended local schools, continuing his education from 1957-1961 at Southern Connecticut State College, where he earned his BS in education.
On Aug. 11, 1952 he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Richardson, Alas. He was honorably discharged from the Army on Aug. 10, 1954 as a Corporal.
He was employed at Southern New England Telephone, State of Connecticut, as a Conservation Officer and was the Director of Security for the Regional Water Authority.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, archery, boating, cooking, gardening, remote control model airplanes, bee keeping, bridge, field trials, mushrooming and reading.
He received a Master Gardener award and his pilot’s license.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Elizabeth Durkin Oesterlin of Cushing; daughter, Sarah Ann Santiago and husband Marcos of Waterbury, Conn.; son, Matthew Ernst Oesterlin and wife Renee of Salem, Mass.; grandchildren, Erik Sargent of Vermont, Mark Sargent of Florida, Christian and Marrianna Santiago of Waterbury, Conn., and Sean and Emilie Oesterlin of Salem, Mass.; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Peter Oesterlin of North Carolina, and Ted Oesterlin of Kennebunk; and sisters-in-law, Arlene Roche of Northhaven, Conn., and Louise Rudnicki of Northhaven, Conn.
Celebration of Walter’s life 5 p.m., Fri., July 25 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 50 Emmanuel Church Rd., Killingworth, Conn. Reception will follow the service at 6 p.m. at the Inn at Middletown, 70 Main St., Middletown, Conn.
At the family’s request, there will be no flowers.
