Sophie M. Lombara, 93, of Wiscasset, passed away at her home Dec. 14. Born on Jan. 31, 1916 in Saugus, Mass., she was the daughter of Stanley and Anna (Rydzewski) Ostrowski.
Sophie grew up in Lynn, Mass. and attended St. Michael’s School as well as the Breed School in Lynn. In 1938, she married Stanley Lombara at St. Michael’s Church, the same church where she attended school.
For many years she helped her husband in his retail photo stores in both Lynn and Melrose, Mass. The couple moved to Wiscasset during the 1970’s where they operated the Wiscasset Country Store on Route 1.
They loved to travel and made it to Poland several times to visit family. She enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with her family, including her special cat Onyx.
Sophie was predeceased by her husband in 2000.
She is survived by son, Stanley and wife Ella Florence Lombara of Wakefield, N.H.; daughter, Anna Ranta of Wiscasset; sisters, Stella Krzywicki of Salem, Mass., Steffe Dembowski of Lynn, Mass., and Lottie O’Malley of Lynn, Mass.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass 11 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 17 at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery following the service.
