Stephen Benjamin Amdur, 69, of Monhegan Island, died in Damariscotta on Aug. 6 from complications associated with heart disease.
Steve had been living on Monhegan Island for the past year, enjoying the Maine coast and lifestyle that he first encountered when his family came to the Boothbay area and Barter’s Island in the 1940s and 50s.
Originally from Massachusetts, Steve’s interest was in philosophy, and he earned degrees from Oberlin College and Columbia University. A lifelong peace activist and member of peace organizations, Steve devoted his life to studying and writing about philosophers. Between 1970 and 2008, Steve lived in Israel, Rhodes (Greece) and Olivone, Switzerland. On his return to the United States, he spent brief time at the Message of the Abode in New Lebanon, N.Y.
Wherever he lived, Steve would be recognized as a gentle, intellectual former hippie, determined to follow his own thoughts without being limited by conventional thinking, expectations of traditional employment or lifestyle. He would attract people who recognized these qualities and would befriend and support him.
Some of Steve’s writings and interests can be found on his website www.geocities.com/sa73122b/.
Steve is survived by his brother, Nicholas Amdur, of Hingham, Mass.
Private services have been conducted. Contributions may be made in Steve’s name to ElderCare Network of Lincoln County, P.O. Box 652, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
