Sue Maunz Smithwick, 79, formerly of Bristol, died April 5 at her son’s home in Falmouth.
She was born in Bradford, Penn. a daughter of Daniel and Florence Griesbaum Maunz.
Sue graduated from Bradford High School in 1954 and earned a BA from Pembroke College at Brown University in Providence, R.I. She later earned her MA in Education at Goucher College, in Baltimore, Md.
While at Pembroke College, Sue met her future husband Stephen M. Smithwick. They married on July 11, 1959 and soon began to raise a family in Marblehead, Mass. Later the family relocated to Swampscott, Mass. where Sue taught second grade for many years.
In 1987, the family moved to South Bristol. Sue quickly became an active member of the community where she volunteered at the public library. She was a wonderful cook, who loved to bake cookies and pies. Sue was also known to reward community members who performed acts of kindness with one of her homemade pies.
Sue was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all. A family member recalls she would always be in the meadow mowing, playing with grandchildren or throwing a ball for the dog; or making cookies and holiday meals for her family with joy. She made pies for a lot of people, including those who worked in various capacities around town. She was always thinking of others.
