Sylvia Pike Munro, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, was escorted to heaven on Sept. 19, three days before her 98th birthday, by her precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Although living at Heaton Woods in Montpelier, Vt. at the time of her passing, Mrs. Munro lived most of her life in Massachusetts where she was born Sylvia Ramsdell Pike on Sept. 22, 1914, in Quincy to Charles and Sylvia Cushman Pike. She was born the second child in a family of two boys and four girls, all of whom have preceded her in death.
Sylvia graduated from Norwell High School and shortly thereafter went to work with her father at a bank in Quincy.
Sylvia married Malcolm Cushman Munro on Aug. 31, 1941, in Hanover. It was later discovered that both Malcolm and Sylvia were direct descendants of Miles and Barbara Standish and John and Priscilla Alden, Pilgrims on the Mayflower. They were also both direct descendants of Robert Cushman, one of the major organizers of the Pilgrims’ trips to America.
Their marriage was blessed with six children, Janice Abel of Plympton, Mass., Shirley Fast of Bloomfield, N.Y., Warren Munro of Rochester, Vt., Edward Munro of Palatine Bridge, N.Y., Robert Munro of Duxbury, Vt., and Marjorie Huff of Panton, Vt. At the time of her passing Sylvia had 11 grandsons, 12 granddaughters, seven great-granddaughters and seven great-grandsons. While her children were growing up, she was active in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Berwick Boosters and the Imperial Drum and Bugle Corps.
In her later years after the death of her husband in 1974, she boldly traveled to Alaska twice, once to Fairbanks, and in 1980 to Fort Yukon, a remote village north of the Arctic Circle.
For years she and Malcolm were members of the Congregational Church in Hanson, Mass., but in her 60s she became a very active member of the Duxbury Baptist Church. During this same period of her life, Sylvia worked for the Pembroke Nurses as a home health aid.
