Tharon E. Carmichael, 83, of Damariscotta, passed away peacefully on May 20 surrounded by her loving family at Chase Point in Damariscotta. The daughter of the late Archie and Catherine Higgins Reed, she was born on Aug. 30, 1929 in Mount Desert, the oldest of nine children. Her father gave her the name of Tharon after reading the book “Tharon of Lost Valley.”
Tharon enjoyed her career and her co-workers as a tele-type operator for Sears Roebuck in Rockland, a position she held until her retirement from the company after many years of diligent service.
Tharon enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and her afghans are still treasured by the family today. Family was an integral part of her life; there was not a weekend that would pass where there was not a small adventure to be had with any number of her siblings. Her love for family did not stop there. She always took the time to check in on the rest of the family and find out how all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren were doing. Her skills in the kitchen were well known around the dinner table and if you had the opportunity to try her scallop casserole, you were one of the lucky ones.
She was predeceased by brother, Vernon “Doug” Reed; and sisters, Constance Morin, Christine Reardon, and Lois Tibbetts.
She is survived by sons, Lewis Carmichael and wife Roberta of Thomaston, and David Carmichael and wife Tina of Damariscotta; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Gilbert Reed and wife Marie, Neal Reed and wife Shirley, and Allan Reed and wife Carol; sister, Nancy Chase; brothers-in-law, Roscoe Tibbetts, and Dick Chase; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Should friends desire, memorial donations in Tharon’s name should be made to the charity of one’s choice.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Sun., June 2 at the Village Cemetery in Thomaston with Rev. Wayne Sawyer officiating.
