Thomas Edward Leighton, “Ed” as he was known to family and friends, has sadly passed away, succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease on Sept. 23 in St. Cloud, Fla.
Ed was born in Bath, Jan. 5, 1943, the youngest of three children born to Tom and Ruth Leighton, and was raised in Sheepscott. As a child, Ed was mischievous and had a quick wit and always had an infectious smile on his face. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He developed into a fine multi-sport athlete, being selected to the U.S. Track and Field Olympic team as well as playing baseball and weightlifting. He graduated in 1960 from Wiscasset High School.
Ed proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Vietnam conflict and continued his service as a reservist until 1985. It was during his time in the military that he met and married his wife, Cathy of 55 years. The Air Force brought the couple to Central Florida, where they resided and raised their family beginning in 1965.
During his life, Ed wore many titles including master plumber, woodworker, teacher, engineer, husband, father and entrepreneur. He approached each with equal conviction and dedication. He enjoyed life, he worked hard but he also had fun. He was dependable and responsible, sometimes working multiple jobs to provide for his family.
Ed had a unique way of making everyone feel comfortable, he was quick with a smile or joke. He took to the open road, traveling by motorcycle, navigated the Florida waterways by boat and in his later years traveled by RV from coast to coast. Ed loved a good party and any excuse to dance a little. He was patient, keen and strong to the very end, still recognizing his loved ones.
Ed is survived by his wife, Cathy; oldest son, Daniel Leighton, wife Milly, and son Elijah; middle child, daughter, Wendie Phillips, husband Mark, and sons Garrett Chase and Cameron; and youngest child and later business partner, Brandon Leighton, wife Lillian, and daughter Arianna.
Ed will be missed by everyone whose life he touched and his memory will live on through the countless number of friends and family.
