Thomas S. Hoffmann, beloved composer, lost his life to a major myocardial infarction and arteriosclerosis on Oct. 15 at his home in Mariposa, Cal.
Tom was a Professor Emeritus of University of Maine at Augusta, Orono, Colby College, Syracuse University of New York, and Trinity College of Music, London.
Tom was born 1947 in New York City. He grew up in Newtown, Conn. where he met and married his first wife JoAnn Tribby. Tom and JoAnn moved to Jefferson to start a life together.
In 1972 Tom’s teaching career began at the University of Maine Augusta campus. There he helped to develop their now nationally recognized jazz program.
Tom was a prolific composer. He published two books on jazz, recorded multiple albums, and performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. He was a mentor to many talented students; many of which are now professors.
Always willing to help others, Tom gave freely of his time and talents. This deeply spiritual man was a kind and gentle soul. He deeply believed that his music was a participation of God’s own creative action, and teaching music was his ministry.
Tom is survived by an older brother; his first and second wives; two children; a stepdaughter; a grandson; many cousins, and countless students and colleagues, all who have been deeply influenced by his life, love and music.
