Ty J. Glasgow, 62, of New Harbor, and formerly of Bedford, N.H., died Oct. 24 surrounded by his wife and three children at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a courageous twelve-year fight with blood cancer.
He was born on April 26, 1956 in Lima, Peru, the son of the late Constance (Townsend) Richards and William Glasgow, and grandson of the late Olive Townsend. Ty grew up in Oakland and San Leandro, Calif.
He earned his private pilot’s license while in high school. He graduated from Skyline Senior High School in 1974. Ty received his Congressional nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy from California and entered in July 1974 with the class of 1978. At the Academy, Ty was a member of 9th Company, was on the Lightweight Crew team and drove his British sports cars – two MGs and a Triumph TR6. He graduated with the class of 1978 with a B.S. in Ocean Engineering. Ty earned his MBA from Bryant University in 1987. After graduation Ty entered the submarine force. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years before being honorably discharged.
Ty worked over 30 years in high tech, holding technical, project management, sales and executive positions with large Fortune 500 companies including Raytheon and Lockheed Martin and later in smaller more entrepreneurial companies like TCC, Objective Communications, Transparent Language/SDL, Bridgeline Digital and most recently Alliance Data Systems/Epsilon. Between the Navy and his long sales career, Ty traveled the globe and reveled in meeting people from all over the world, and enjoyed learning about their customs and culture, especially tasting the cuisine.
Ty was married to Missy on June 19, 1982. During their 36 years of marriage, they raised three beautiful children, traveled as often as time and money would allow, enjoying many wonderful family vacations. One of his favorite memories was a mini vacation at the Island Inn on Monhegan Island. Some of Ty’s favorite times were spent cooking with Melissa, walking Pemaquid Beach, date nights trying new restaurants, and attending his kids’ activities. He loved watching his daughters perform in musical theater and cheering his son on in football.
Ty loved running and completed three marathons. He backpacked in the White Mountains, climbing many of the peaks, both alone and with his children. Moving to Maine three years ago, near his beloved Pemaquid Beach, made Ty very happy. He loved kayaking in Johns Bay and on the Pemaquid River and never left home without his binoculars so that he could spy on his bird and animal friends up close and personal. Ty loved helping people achieve their goals and the Naval Academy was very important to Ty so he worked with prospective USNA applicants to learn more about the academy, mentored them in their application process, and assisted them on their journey through the Academy. He also enjoyed working with recent college graduates in starting their professional careers.
Ty was predeceased by sister, Tracy Edwards.
Ty is survived by his wife, Melissa (Tuttle) Glasgow; daughters, Heather Glasgow of Boston, Mass., and Bridget Glasgow of Southampton, Penn.; son, Ryan Glasgow of Hamburg, Germany; sister, Shelly Glasgow of Berkeley, Calif.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jeff and Tricia DeWeese of Fairfax, Va.; nieces, Amanda Stacy and Abigail Ng of Columbus, Ohio; nephew, Jeffrey DeWeese of Littleton, Col.; many cousins and friends; and beloved grand-dogs, Sophie and Murphy of Southampton, Penn.
Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m., Mon., Oct. 29 at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 250 Coolidge Ave., Manchester, N.H. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tues., Oct. 30 in St. Elizabeth Seton Church with military honors to follow. Burial will be at a later date.
