Vera Fish, 93, a resident of Hodgdon Green in Damariscotta and longtime resident of Newcastle, died May 4 at her residence, after a period of failing health, with her family at her side.
Vera was born Nov. 6, 1916 in Friendship, the daughter of Stacy and Mildred Burns Simmons, and attended Friendship Schools and Lincoln Academy after her family moved to Newcastle.
She married Arthur Fish, and while residing in Newcastle, she raised her family and assisted her husband in operating his express trucking company, Art’s Express, for many years.
Vera was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Damariscotta and was active in many community projects.
She was devoted to her family and cherished her close ties to her five sisters and her brother, Lowell, who was killed in action during WWII. After raising her three children, Vera became an enthusiastic grandmother. Her camp on Biscay Pond was a magical part of summer vacations for every grandchild. Adored by all for her warmth and wonderful sense of humor, Vera leaves a legacy of treasured memories.
Vera is predeceased by her husband Arthur Fish; brother, Lowell; and sisters, Grace, Connie and Helene.
Survivors include her daughters Joan Hanks of Winter Harbor and Sandra Redimaker of South Berwick; son, Vaughn Fish of Bremen; sisters, Beatrice Kaler of Waldoboro and Scarborough and Gloria Knipe of New Harbor; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Celebration of Vera’s life 11 a.m., Sat., May 22 at the Hillside Cemetery, Church St., Damariscotta. A gathering is to follow at Hodgdon Green.
