Vernon D. Stapleford, 98, died Feb. 15 at St. Andrews Village. He was born to Edith and Guy Stapleford on Aug. 28, 1916 in North Anson, where he grew up with nine siblings on a farm.
Vernon attended Gorham Normal School and graduated in the class of 1937 receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree. He spent his career as an Industrial Arts teacher in schools in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Connecticut before retiring from East Haven, Conn. school in 1973. He and his wife Ginny built a log home in Sprucewold, Boothbay Harbor in 1975 where they lived before moving to the St. Andrews Village. Vernon and Ginny enjoyed many activities together especially aboard Little Bay Lady sailing in Linekin Bay. He kept himself busy building furniture projects in his little garage shop. He also became an amateur writer, publishing children’s stories about Adventures of Peter Mouse and Uncle Bing on the farm which were read by local students on Boothbay Harbor’s channel 7.
He is survived by daughters, June and husband John Monahan, and Janet and husband William Blaha; and granddaughter, Bonnie Blaha.
He was predeceased by his wife Virginia; and siblings, Violet Warren, Charles Stapleford, Gladys Franklin, Dorothy Cleveland, Clarence Stapleford, Grey Stapleford, Grace Oliver, Ruth Guilfoyle, and Earl Stapleford.
