Veronia M. Cummings, 87, of Walpole, passed away peacefully at her home in Walpole on March 5. Born in Rockland on Feb. 28, 1924, she was the daughter of Cecil and Gladys (Knowlton) Murphy.
Veronia grew up in Rockland, attending local schools and graduating from Rockland High School in 1942. Upon graduation she went to work for the New England Bell Telephone Company in Rockland, where she would remain for several years.
On June 2, 1946 she married Myron Cummings and the couple lived in Rockland where they started their family. In 1953 the family moved to Damariscotta when Myron purchased the Strong Funeral Home. Veronia assisted Myron in the daily activities of the funeral home and became an active part of the community.
She was a long-time member of the Eastern Star, the Miles Memorial Hospital League, Wawenock Country Club, and while living in Damariscotta was active in the Second Congregational Church.
Veronia loved people and socializing; often times, this was done over a game of bridge or cribbage. She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed all types of seafood, especially lobster and clams. With a love of sweets, there could always be candy or chocolate found in her vicinity.
She was known for her great sense of humor and an amazingly quick wit; a wit, that even in her final days, she never lost.
She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Myron “Dud” Cummings; as well as brothers, Clifford Murphy and Clarence “Sonny” Murphy.
She is survived by her children, Lynda Estabrook and husband Glenn of Walpole and Bruce Cummings and wife Karen of Bristol; sister, Charlotte Staples of Owls Head; grandchildren, Jeffrey Lovejoy and wife Jenna of Ft. Eustis, Va., and Caitlin and Mitchell Cummings, both of Bristol; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Time of visitation 4-6 p.m., Thurs., March 17 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Service 2 p.m., Fri., March 18 also at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the West Bristol Cemetery in the spring.
