Vincent “Vinny” Thomas Doherty, 71, passed away peacefully at his home in Silver Spring, Md. on the afternoon of Aug. 12, surrounded and comforted by his loving family.
Born in Cambridge, Mass. on Feb. 9, 1945, he was the second child of Mary Coneeny and Thomas Doherty. He attended schools in Somerville, Mass. and studied at Boston State College in Boston, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy, and was stationed at Roosevelt Roads in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
After his honorable service, he left the Navy and returned to the Boston area to attend college. He eventually moved to Maine and began work as a master electrician for the U.S. Government at the Naval Air Station in Brunswick. In Maine, he met his wife Amy Hanna Doherty. They were married in Round Pond on Dec. 22, 1986.
Vinny loved traveling with his family and especially exploring the back roads of New England, listening to his favorite artists, Van Morrison and Tom Waits, always on the hunt for a good fishing spot or a new shortcut. Though a true Bostonian and devoted fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots, his heart always belonged to Round Pond, and the beloved family and friends who reside there.
He was a member of local hockey and softball leagues and an enthusiastic fan at all the sporting events of his children, grandchildren and friends. A self-proclaimed founder of the Round Pond Fourth of July Parade, he never failed to participate in its 30-year history.
After retirement, Vinny spent most of his days playing golf, seeking out the obscure local courses so as to be sure to have a story to tell at the end of the day. Wherever he and his family moved along the east coast and overseas, he was always able to make a new place home. He was a loving husband, proud father and doting and adoring grandfather and his good humor, infectious laugh, and generous smile will be greatly missed.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Jean Doherty.
He is survived by his wife, Amy Hanna Doherty; children, Erin Keeton (Ryan), Maura Doherty and Alyssa Doherty Jahn; sister, Christine Campbell (David); mother-in-law, Myrtle; grandchildren, Aiden Keeton, Colleen Doherty, Ava Doherty, and Michael Jahn; nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends, especially lifelong friends, Martyn and Kathleen Moses.
A graveside inurnment will take place at 11 a.m., Fri., Aug. 19 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Round Pond with the Rev. Kelly Harvell officiating. The inurnment will be followed by a celebration of his life at The 1812 Farm in Bristol at 1 p.m.
