Virgil Leroy Simmons, Sr., 81, formerly of Warren, passed away on Dec. 16 at Maine General Hospital, Augusta.
Born Nov. 3, 1926, in Friendship, he was the son of Irvin Simmons, Sr. and Jennie Jennings Simmons. Growing up in Friendship, he attended local schools before enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, serving as Seaman First Class during WWII.
Virgil was employed as a truck driver for Feyler’s Fish Company out of Rockland and transported bait to Canada and New England for over 30 years. He then worked for O’Hara’s, trucking ice and bait until his retirement.
He enjoyed bowling, and playing cribbage and poker, was an avid reader and loved animals.
He will be fondly remembered as “Pappy” by his family.
Survivors include his wife and best friend, Gloria M. Simmons of Chelsea; son, Virgil L. Simmons, Jr. of Chelsea; daughter, Bonnie S. Wescott of Warren; two step-children; several nieces and nephews; and family friend, Todd Austin of Chelsea.
A graveside service will be held at a date and time to be announced in the spring at the German Protestant Cemetery in Waldoboro.
