Virginia Burk, 94, of Jefferson, passed away June 9. She was born Dec. 23, 1916 in Augusta to Chester and Addie Knight Boynton.
Virginia attended the North Whitefield one room grammar school and graduated from Cony High School in 1935. She attended Farmington Normal School and worked at Augusta Mental Health Institution for over 20 years.
Her and her husband, Francis, owned a dairy farm in South Jefferson and shipped milk for 42 years, working long hours every day. They were both members of the South Somerville Baptist Church. She had been treasurer of the Highland Cemetery, Jefferson, Trust Fund for over 50 years.
Virginia enjoyed and looking forward to trips with her son William and great-grandchildren to Ohio, Wisconsin and Lancaster, Penn. visiting family members, the Amish people and the battlefields at Gettysburg. She was very interested in U.S. history. She enjoyed telling stories of her grandfather’s sawmill in South Jefferson. She also wrote a history of this sawmill and donated it to the Jefferson Historical Society.
Virginia cared for her husband who was in a wheelchair after a severe stroke in 1992 until he predeceased her in January 2002.
She was also predeceased by her brother, Ira Dana Boynton and sister, Marcia Cas Manneneu.
She is survived by brothers, Alden and Albert Boynton of Cromwell, Conn.; sister, Shirley Cotter of Leominster, Mass.; son, William Burk Sr. of South Jefferson; grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca, William Jr., James and Kelley; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service 1 p.m., Tues., June 14 at the Highland Cemetery in Jefferson.
