Virginia “Carol” (Verney) Shorey, 80, of Sheepscott (Newcastle), died on May 14 at her home.
She was born July 27, 1932 to John Waldo Verney and Selena May (Gilbey) Verney in Bath.
She graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1949 and held office as the secretary of her class. After graduation she worked at the First National Bank for many years, until her children were born and became an amazing homemaker and mother.
She lived in the Village of Sheepscott her whole life, growing up and then raising her own family there.
Carol was very active in the communities of Newcastle and Sheepscott for many years, belonging to the Garrison Hill Grange for 67 years, the Ladies Circle for 50-plus years and The Ladies Home Extension for 40-plus years. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church and served on the board and was the treasurer for many years of the Sheepscott Cemetery.
All who knew her understood what a kind-hearted person she was. She loved her family and her community – and was always helping others.
Carol enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing and crocheting. She had a love for animals and donated regularly to the local animal shelters.
Carol was predeceased by her mother, Selena May (Gilbey) Verney; father, John Waldo Verney; brothers, Victor Verney and Clayton Verney; and sister, Evengeline (Verney) Jordan.
Carol is survived by her husband, Walter C. Shorey of Sheepscott; sisters, Audrey (Verney) Krah of Waldoboro and Madelyn (Verney) Pierce of Damariscotta; brother, Richard Verney of Alna; children and spouses, Peter and Debbie Shorey of Nobleboro, John and Grace Shorey of Alna, Shelley Shorey and Peter Andrew Payson of Rockland, and Susan (Shorey) and Tim Ferrarotti of New Hartford, Conn.; grandchildren, Peter Shorey Jr. and Becky Norling, Josh Shorey, Brandon Shorey, Brianna Shorey, Brian Ferrarotti, Adam Ferrarotti and Chris Ferrarotti; and great-granddaughter, Gabriela Karis-Shorey.
Celebration of Carol’s life 10 a.m., Fri., May 24 at the Sheepscott Valley Community Church, followed by a reception at the Sheepscott Clubhouse. Please come and share your memories of Carol with her friends and family.
