Virginia E. Howard, 83, of Jefferson, passed away Dec. 27 at Glenridge in Augusta.
Born in Jefferson on June 15, 1923, she was a daughter of Earl L. and Annie C. Plummer Glidden.
Virginia graduated from Union High School, class of 1941, and worked as a babysitter. She started training to be a nurse in Rockland, and finished in Lewiston where she graduated as a registered nurse. She worked at AMHI as an R.N., and later retired from nursing to raise her two children.
On Christmas Eve, 1945, she married Warner Howard in the Methodist Church in Union. Together they bought their first home in Jefferson, the house in which Virginia was born. They lived there until 2002, when she was forced to move into a nursing home, due to ill health. During her stay at the nursing home, she enjoyed making crafts.
Virginia was an avid reader. She was a leader of the 4-H Group, a member of the Rebekas in Augusta, and taught Sunday school at the North Nobleboro Baptist Church. She enjoyed Christmas and always opened her gifts last, so she could enjoy watching the family open theirs.
Virginia and Warren enjoyed traveling by bus, and taking many tours to Branson, Mo., in addition to other places. She and her son, Danny, enjoyed a trip to Europe.
She was predeceased by her brother, Lin Glidden.
