Virginia G. McFarland, 97, of Newcastle, formerly of South Bristol, passed away on the evening of Aug. 13 at the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta. Born on Feb. 21, 1920 in South Bristol, she was the daughter of Lynwood B. and Alta (Kelsey) Goudy.
Virginia attended the local one-room Gladstone School in Walpole, and went on to graduate from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle in 1938.
On Oct. 8, 1938, she married Wm. Addison McFarland, who passed away in May of 2001 after 63 years of marriage. Their first few years were spent living in Christmas Cove, then they moved to Walpole. In later years, they purchased a home back in Christmas Cove, where they spent the summer months, and finally spent their last few years together in the home where Addison had grown up. In October 2003, Virginia chose to move to the Lincoln Home in Newcastle, where she enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and excellent care.
Virginia served as both the secretary and treasurer of the Rutherford Library for many years. She never worked outside the home, but was the bookkeeper for Addison’s businesses. In her spare time, she could be found doing crossword puzzles, reading, and crocheting the many afghans she shared with friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by children in infancy, Jeannie and Dana McFarland; and granddaughter, Christina McFarland.
Virginia is survived by daughter, Marie and husband Fred Naylor of Honolulu and Damariscotta; son, Wayne McFarland and wife Raynor; grandchildren, Lynette Naylor McGowan and husband John, F. Michael Naylor and wife BeeBee, Jeannie McFarland and companion Brian Barter, Shayne McFarland and companion Jamie Brewer, all of Walpole, and Crystal McLain and companion David Presutte of Bristol; great-grandchildren, Jason Bent, Jeremy Bent and companion Heather Matthews, Maria, Rachael, and Ryan Naylor, Travis Sapp and wife Ali, Courtney Taylor, Kasey Brewer and husband Kevin, Tyler and Kyle McFarland; and great-great-granddaughter, Kelsea Brewer.
Family and friends are invited to a gathering at 1 p.m., Sat., Aug. 19 at the Lincoln Home, 22 River Rd., Newcastle. At her request, burial will be private.
