Virginia R. Gamage, 101, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away Aug. 1 at Hodgdon Green in Damariscotta. She was the daughter of the late Winifred Farnham Reed of Boothbay Harbor and William B. Reed of Edgecomb.
She was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School and Salutatorian of her class. She was the manager and sales clerk at Porter’s Drug Store for many years.
Virginia married her childhood sweetheart, Gleason Gamage of Newagen, on May 8, 1933. Together they owned and operated rental cottages at Southport during the summer season.
She was a life member of Boothbay Region Alumni Association, charter and life member of the Boothbay Region Humane Society and a member of the Boothbay Harbor Historical Society. She and her husband devoted much time and energy to the welfare of animals.
After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and had visited many countries in Europe, Great Britain and Hawaii and many in the Caribbean as well as many bus trips in the U.S. and Canada and wintered in Florida for over 32 years.
They spent about 30 winters in Jensen Beach and Stuart, Fla.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Gleason Gamage in January 2005; brother, Luther Reed in 1931; and long-time friend, Faith Barstow.
Survivors include her nephews, George Dewey Gamage Jr. of Alamogordo, N.M. and Gerald Gamage of Boothbay; niece, Kay Gamage of Alamogordo, N.M.; sister-in-law, Emily Blake of Norway; great niece, Elizabeth Dodge of Norway; and several distant cousins, among them, Carrie and James Fossa of Peabody.
Graveside service 10 a.m., Sat., Aug. 13 at Oceanview Cemetery, Boothbay.
