Virginia V. Light, 87, of Waldoboro, passed away peacefully at Pen Bay Medical Center on Sept. 17.
She was born in Plymouth, Mass. on Dec. 26, 1925, the daughter of the late Leland and Mildred Dodge Vannah. Growing up in Plymouth she attended local schools and was a graduate of Plymouth High School.
Her summer months were spent in Waldoboro, living with family and working at various places. This tradition continued even after her high school days. After finishing her education, she worked at Butners Department Store in Plymouth.
When the war in Europe broke out, she began to volunteer for the Red Cross at Camp Edwards. While there she completed a variety of tasks. Her time spent doing this work was some of the best times of her life.
During one of her summer trips to Waldoboro, she met her future husband Charles. The two were married in June of 1948 and settled on the Light family farm, the same farm that Charles was raised on. While living in Waldoboro, a position at Sylvania opened up and she began her career there. This career lasted many years before she returned to the farm to continue to help with the day-to-day operations.
She enjoyed knitting, reading, and, in her later years, playing cards. Living on the farm had its perks as she loved being around the horses and other animals. A master in the kitchen, nothing ever came from a package it was always cooked homemade from scratch.
She was past master at the Progressive Grange, and was a past member of Knox Pomona Grange and the Midcoast Shriners Ladies.
While attending the Methodist Church in Waldoboro, she could be found singing in the choir or teaching the children at Sunday school. In her later years she was a member of the Lincoln County Assembly of God in Damariscotta.
She loved her family and was very supportive in everything they did, never once telling the girls no. She tried to open up as many doors for them as possible.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Charles Light; sisters, Minnie Vannah, who passed away as an infant, and Leona Elwell.
She is survived by her daughters, Loretta Dean and husband Ralph of Thomaston, and Margaret Burnham and husband Dana of Waldoboro; sister, Carolyn Hutchins and husband Vernon of Jefferson; grandchildren, Raymond Meservey Jr. and wife Lori, Debra Joslyn and husband Steve, Jason Meservey and wife Pentipa, Kristena Darlack and husband Andrew, Rebecca Light, Matthew Light and wife Jessica, and Elijah Burnham; great-grandchildren, Cory, Hillary, Singto, and Alice Meservey, McKenzie, Jordan, and Liliana Light; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Sat., Sept. 21 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro with Rev. Joel Morley officiating. Burial will take place at the Rural Cemetery, Route 220 North Waldoboro, following the service.
