Walter George Miete, 90, of Alna, died May 12 at his residence.
He was born in Alna on Oct. 16, 1919, a son of Otto L. and Annie Marie (Tirronen) Miete.
He attended Alna schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1937. He was employed at Bath Iron Works and in 1942 he enlisted the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Cadet. He trained at several locations around the country before serving during WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam, retiring after 22 years at as Lieutenant Commander. He returned to Bath Iron Works. On Feb. 19, 1950 he married M. Jo Smith. In 1981 they moved to Alna.
He was a member of the Wiscasset American Legion Post 54 and served as National Commanders Aide as well as Chaplain for the Department of Maine for five years.
He loved baseball and working on his John Deere tractor.
He was predeceased by brothers, Paul H. Miete, Lauri L. Miete and Olavi O. Miete; and sisters, Mae Pelto, Aune Graffam and Helmi Miete.
He is survived by his wife M. Jo Miete; son, Michael K. Miete and wife Gloria of Dresden; daughter, Jolene A. Meldrum of Houston, Tex.; grandchildren, Michelle Miete, Michael Miete, Jaimie Jo Webb and Kara B. O’Steen; great-grandchildren, Curtis M. Hammond, Jazmyne Rose Grant and Lexi Page Webb.
Funeral service 2 p.m., Sat., May 22 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset U.C.C. Burial will follow at the Alna Cemetery in Alna with full military honors. Gathering of family and friends will follow at the church parish hall.
