Walter Joseph Pfizenmayer died of pancreatic cancer on May 6 in The Lincoln Home in Newcastle, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Aug. 7, 1921. He attended St. Paul’s Prep School in Garden City, N.Y. and went on to Amherst College, class of 1944.
He was a WWII veteran.
Walter was a great adventurer. He loved to travel and one of his favorite trips was a safari through Africa with Ernest Hemingway’s pilot. He had many interests that included wildlife conservation, football, and American presidents, especially Theodore Roosevelt.
He was always involved with community service. He served on the vestry for two terms for St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newcastle.
Walter is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Robert and Susan Pfizenmayer of Rockville Centre, N.Y., Melanie Pfizenmayer of Milville, N.J., and Sheri DeGray and husband Chris DeGray of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; grandchildren, Ray, Shaun and Meredith Lyons, Trina Wallace and Lisa DeGray; great-great-grandchildren, Lucas, Travis and Terrence Wallace, of Hampton Bays, N.Y.
Memorial service 11 a.m., Tues., May 8 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newcastle, followed by a reception at The Lincoln Home.
