Walter L. Smith died April 19 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 17, 1939, the son of Bertha (Veino) and Otis Smith. He graduated in 1958 from Portland High School, Portland. Walter worked at Cushman’s Bakery, Healthtex and Art’s Variety. He leaves four children, Margaret Heiderman of New Glouster, Brenda (Smith) Hughs of Madison, N.H., Terry Smith of Westbrook, and Mary Ellen Smith of Portland; eight grandchildren; five sisters; one brother; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his best friend and fishing buddy, Logan Winter, and his companion of six years, Joy (Avery) Bancroft. Four brothers previously deceased him.
