Walter M. McFarland, Jr. 81, of Harpswell, passed away on Aug. 8 at his home.
Born in New Harbor on Dec. 23, 1925, he was the son of Walter M., Sr. and Ida (Loud) McFarland.
Growing up in Bristol, he graduated from Bristol High School and entered the U.S. Army in 1944. He was a radio operator during WWII, and honorably discharged in 1946. On June 5, 1947, he married Roberta Bailey and he began his career as a lobster fisherman.
In 1951, he was diagnosed with a chronic illness, and moved to Schenectady, N.Y. where he began a new career as supervisor of procurement at the Army Depot.
Upon retirement in 1961, he moved back to Maine where he enjoyed gardening and developed into a great talent as a wood carver. He was an avid sports fan, and particularly loved the Boston Red Sox.
He was predeceased by his wife in 1997.
He is survived by two sons, Wayne W. McFarland of Augusta and Eric A. McFarland of Harpswell; and grandchildren, Trevor McFarland, Ian McFarland and Darren McFarland.
Graveside service 10 a.m., Fri., Aug. 17 at the Harrington Cemetery in Pemaquid, where he will be laid to rest with his wife.
