Walter R. Foster, of Steep Falls, passed away on Jan. 7 at the “farm” where he spent his final years with Kay, his friends and many cats.
Walter was born in Bristol on April 19, 1917 to Jesse Harris Foster and Ruel Foster. He lived in Bristol and Round Pond for many years where he was a fixture in the village and at his brother Robert’s auctions.
Walter also spent many years in the Portland area where he called everybody “Capt.” While there he attended Grace Baptist Church. He worked at Goodwill for a brief period of time but he preferred doing odd jobs, mowing lawns, cutting wood and collecting recyclables on his own. He became well-known in Portland. He would always greet you with a friendly smile as he blessed you.
In later years he attended the senior program at PSL where he made many friends. His life was very enriched from his attendance there. He loved to tell you he was an artist and that he made designs. He’d gladly sell you one for $5 because after all “a man can’t live on a thank you.” Walter was an old-fashioned, interesting character who brought joy and humor to those whose lives he touched. He was always glad to sing you a song.
He is predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Robert L. and Harris Foster.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews.
There will be an internment and a celebration of his life at the “farm” in April. The date will be announced.
