Walter Wayne Hilton, 67, passed away unexpectedly on June 20. Born in Damariscotta on June 28, 1948, he was the son of Irma McLoon and John Hilton.
As “The Mayor of Damariscotta,” Walter was well known, well loved, and an active member in his community. He loved his town almost as much as he loved his family. He spent a lot of time at McDonald’s, which he called his ‘office.’ You could find him there every day reading the paper and greeting people. He worked as a teacher, carpenter, and chief building inspector for city hall. His true passion was working with the developmentally disabled, which he did for over 30 years.
He served on the board of selectmen for Damariscotta, and was currently chair of the zoning board. He was the number one fan at Lincoln Academy’s sporting events. He loved basketball, and never missed a game. Walter had a passion for politics, and you always knew where he stood. At the end of every “debate,” he finished up with “I love you.” Walter also took in many wayward teenagers and kept them in high school. His home was always open to anyone who needed one.
He loved his kids and grandkids; his life revolved around his family. He had six grandkids; Devan Clark, Robbie Clark, Madison Hartford, Jack Hartford, Christine Hilton, and Brendan Mammina; as well as many adopted kids and grandkids. They were his pride and joy.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, and soul mate, Vikki Hilton.
His children are Heather Hartford and husband John of Damariscotta, Heidi Clark and husband Jigger of Jefferson, and Scott Hilton and wife Carolee of Damariscotta.
He is also survived by brothers, John Hilton and wife Brenda of Newcastle, Clifton Hilton of Bangor, and Michael McLoon and wife Peggy of Jefferson; sisters, Stephanie Ferrell and husband Jim of Murphy N.C., Kathy Timberlake and husband Bob of Woolwich, and Mary Sidelinger and husband Fred of Newcastle; and best friend “with a boat,” Joe Jacobs.
A celebration of Walter’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Tues., June 28 at the Lincoln Academy gymnasium.
In lieu of flowers, Walter has asked that you please not vote for Hillary Clinton.
