Wendell B. Lewis Jr., of Damariscotta, passed away unexpectedly Jan. 7 at his home with his wife and granddaughter by his side. He was loved and respected by family, friends and clients, and known for his integrity, honesty, truthfulness and caring. He was never too busy to help anyone.
Wendell was born on Jan. 21, 1941 in Brunswick. He graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1959. In 1958 he achieved Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He attended Moody Bible Institute and Gordon College. In May of 1964, he and Lorna Dianne Lothrop were married.
He began his career with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance in September of 1969. He and Jim McAllister started Professional Planning Associates in Yarmouth to serve the health and life insurance needs of their clients. They were friends and business partners for 40 years. Wendell retired in December of 2008.
Wendell was a member of the Maine National Association of Insurance Advisors and a former member of the Boothbay Lions Club. He was called “The Engine Man” at the Maine Antique Power Association. He was a member of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, and was President of the Board of Directors of the Boothbay Railway Village Museum.
Wendell had a unique hobby of gathering specialty woods and wood burles for his artist friends, Lou Landry from East Boothbay and Richard Corson of Bremen. They called him “The Burle Man”.
Survivors include his son, Aaron Andrew Lewis of Portland; daughters, Amy Susan Davis of Wiscasset and Amy’s fiancé, Matthew Sinclair of Wayne; father, Wendell B. Lewis Sr. and Louise of Rockland; two brothers, The Reverend Daniel Lewis and Kathy of Clearwater, Fla., and Kenneth and Sharon Lewis of Holden; and grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas, Adam and Haley Elizabeth.
Gathering of family, friends, and clients to celebrate and review Wendell’s life 10 a.m., Sat., Jan. 17 at the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.
