Whitney Thorne Ferguson Jr., 94, of Vernon, Conn. and New Harbor, beloved husband of the late Olive Stokes, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 21.
Whitney was born in Stow, Mass. on Aug. 27, 1923 to the late Whitney T. and Helen Elizabeth (Hearsey) Ferguson. He was a graduate of Hale High School, Class of 1940. In January of 1944 he married the love of his life, Olive Beverly Stokes. Whitney faithfully served our country with the U.S. Army during WWII with tours in the Philippines and Germany, with the European Command.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Tufts College in 1949. He worked with Department of Transportation of Connecticut, Connecticut Light & Power, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service. Whitney served his community as well as a member of First Congregational Church of Vernon, serving as a deacon and organist, while also serving on the building committee and pastoral search committee. He was also on the town of Vernon’s Planning Commission and was involved with the Manchester Pipe Band, American Society of Civil Engineers, and Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, of Tufts University.
Whitney was predeceased by his beloved bride, Olive Ferguson; son, Whitney T. Ferguson III; and brothers, Alan Hearsey Ferguson and Charles Edward Ferguson.
Whitney is survived by son, Bruce Ferguson and wife Martha of Millwood, N.Y.; daughter, Cynthia Ferguson of Spring, Tex.; grandchildren, Andrew Call and wife Hadar of Madison, Conn., James Call and wife Shannon of Spring, Tex., and Ian Ferguson and Tyler Ferguson, both of Millwood, N.Y.; and great-grandchildren, Austin Call, Brandon Call, and Oliver Call.
Calling hours were held Feb. 25 at Ladd Funeral Home, Vernon, Conn. Funeral services were Feb. 26 at First Congregational Church of Vernon, Vernon, Conn. Burial will be held privately at a later date.
