Wilfred Doyle, 87, of Damariscotta, passed away November 2014.
Born in 1927 in Boston, Mass., Wil spent his childhood summers in Damariscotta at a cottage on Pemaquid Pond. He was a WWII Navy veteran and studied physics at Northeastern University. While there, he met Naomi, who became his wife of 64 years and mother of his three daughters.
Wilfred’s early work experience ranged from pumping gas and TV repair to student teacher of junior high school science, before he began his engineering career with Western Electric. He, his wife, and three daughters lived in almost all the northern Border States while he set up SAGE air defense system sites for Western Electric. They finally settled in Montclair, N.J., where he worked for Bell Laboratories for the next twenty years.
Wil loved Maine and decided on a summer retirement at the Pemaquid cottage with the winters spent on Marco Island in Florida. In 2001, he built a winter home just up the road from the Pemaquid Pond cottage so he could live in Maine full time.
Wil played clarinet all his life and enjoyed playing in the Bath Municipal Band. He was very active and liked fishing, boating, bicycling, and long walks. Wil also enjoyed camping with his family. His love of the outdoors and involvement in protecting the environment led him to become an active member of the Pemaquid Watershed Association, where he participated in water quality monitoring, loon counts, and other activities. Wilfred, his wife Naomi, and his sister Carol Finnegan donated the land to the PWA, which now forms the Doyle Preserve.
Wilfred is survived by daughters, April Wolf of Damariscotta, Jennifer Doyle, and Cheryl Doyle of Waldoboro; and grandchildren, Jennifer Michaud of Saco, Alisa Kidney, Rachel Schaefer, and Stephanie Schaefer.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sat., Aug. 8 at the Lakehurst Lodge in Damariscotta.
