William H. Jones, 82, of Waldoboro, passed away on Sept. 19 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
He was born March 17, 1925 in Jefferson, a son of Melvin and Ethel Jones. He grew up in Jefferson and attended local schools. He worked at Bath Iron Works prior to enlisting in the Navy during WWII. He was in the Armed Guard that protected merchant ships.
Bill started cutting Christmas trees for Percy Moody and was asked by Percy if he would like to join Moody’s Diner as a cook. Bill cooked for 45 years and became a co-owner in 1992. He retired in the late 1990’s. While cooking at Moody’s Diner, Bill and his wife Nellie (Percy’s daughter) also ran Moody’s Island Campground and Moody’s Cabins for many years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waldoboro, Charles C. Lilly American Legion Post #149, and the Soule-Shuman VFW in Waldoboro.
He was a graduate of the Adult Education Program at Medomak Valley High School, class of 1975. He was a former selectman of Waldoboro.
Bill enjoyed listening to his police scanner, playing solitaire, talking on his CB radio, and tinkering on his Model A and other projects. He enjoyed people and especially playing with and spoiling his grandchildren. He also enjoyed giving some of his grandchildren driving lessons.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Nellie Moody Jones, who died in 2005, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Jones of Waldoboro; daughters, Rebecca Little of Waldoboro, and Patricia Caldwell of Hermon; sons, Robert Jones of Waldoboro, and Barry Jones of Waldoboro; stepchildren, Lorraine Boren of Rhode Island and Arnold Danforth of Freeport; brother, Bruce Jones of Portsmouth, R.I.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Fri., Sept. 21 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
Celebration of Bill’s life 1 p.m., Sat., Sept. 22 at the First Baptist Church in Waldoboro. Pastor John Vermilion, Pastor Mike Peterson and Rev. Bob Bellows will officiate.
A reception will follow at the church followed by a committal service at 4 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Jefferson.
