William Jennison Greene, 80, of South Bristol, passed away after a prolonged illness on Jan. 29 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born on March 19, 1929, in Bay City, Mich., the son of Raymond Barry Greene and Agatha Angell Rowland.
He grew up in Grosse Pointe, Mich., and attended schools in Michigan and Massachusetts. He later attended the Arts and Crafts School in Detroit.
Bill joined the U.S. Army in 1951 where he served in the 7th Infantry division in Korea. After his discharge, he was employed by Chrysler Corporation in Detroit. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1957.
He moved to Maine in the early 60s and later met and married Sylvia Giasson. He had a passion for sport cars and motorcycles and especially sailing, which was fully realized when he moved to Maine and sailed his many boats from Christmas Cove. Several sailboats were named after his beloved grandfather’s boat Flight, and Sylvia G. after his beloved wife for over 41 years.
As a 27 year survivor of esophageal cancer, life, family and friends became even more precious and appreciated. He especially looked forward to, and enjoyed, his almost daily visits to Waltz Pharmacy for camaraderie with his friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, Raymond of Berkley, Cal.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia of South Bristol; sisters, Agatha East of Burlington, Vt., and Alexia Buckingham of Bristol; as well as several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
At his request, there will be no service. His ashes will be scattered in the outer harbor of Christmas Cove where he set his sails so many times.
