William John Berry, 82, of Nobleboro, passed away on Sept. 18 at the Miles Memorial Hospital skilled nursing unit in Damariscotta.
Born Feb. 2, 1928 in Somerville, Mass., he was the son of Sheldon and Nora (Kelly) Berry. The family moved to Maine in 1930, where Mr. Berry attended local schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1946.
He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean war as a M/Sgt with the 2nd Infantry (Indianhead) Division, earning the combat Infantry badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Purple Heart and two bronze stars (for valor). Returning to Maine, he served five years with the Reserves, approximately 20 years at Hyde Windlas / Bath Iron Works as a machinist, and nearly another 20 years with The First National Bank of Damariscotta, retiring in 1990.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, George Berry Sr.; and stepson, Ronald Bean.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Hilda Kaye Berry; sister, Alice A. Berry of Somerville, Mass.; stepdaughters, Jodeane Ramsey of Gorham, Sandra Bean of Standish, and Michelle Johnson of Westbrook; a nephew; and three nieces.
Celebration of his life 11 a.m., Sat., Sept. 25 at the First Baptist Church of Nobleboro with military honors. Internment will follow at the Dunbar Cemetery in Nobleboro.
