William Selye Campbell, 82, of Waldoboro, formerly of Katonah, N.Y. and Damariscotta, died April 30. Born in Stamford, Conn., he attended the Putney School in Vermont. He worked with the CCC and the Bucket Theater at Reid Hollow in Brattleboro, Vt. He attended Bard College and graduated from Harvard College in 1949. William worked as a car mechanic, milkman and in retail before joining the family telephone answering service business for doctors on the upper east side of Manhattan. He was married to Mary Gaskill from 1949 to her death in 1992, and to Joanne Bailey Anderson from July 2003. In Katonah, N.Y. he worked with the Katonah Village Improvement Society, Katonah Library and founded a local film society. In Maine he worked with the Damariscotta River Association, Round Top Center for the Arts, and the Skidompha Library. He enjoyed hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, soaring in Vermont, reading, listening to music, and photographing nature. He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne; children, William, Deborah, Angus, Todd, Lauren, Nora, Tom, and Joan; and grandchildren, Fiona, Jessica, Amy and Kevin. In his memory, donations may be made to the Waldoboro Library Fund, PO Box 768, Waldoboro, ME 04572-0768. Memorial service 2 p.m., Sun., July 9 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Glidden St., Newcastle.
