Winona L. Jones, 90, of Augusta, passed away peacefully Oct. 31 at MaineGeneral Medical Rehabilitation and Nursing Care.
She was born in Jefferson on Aug. 23, 1923, the daughter of Harold Dow and Bernice (Cunningham) Dow. She attended school in Jefferson, graduated from Cony High School in 1941 and attended Gates Business School in Augusta.
She enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing, crafts, going to the ocean, traveling, playing bridge, and sitting in the sun. She faithfully cared for family using her creative skills through cooking and baking, sewing and crafting. She loved her home and family gatherings filled her with joy and happiness.
She was employed by the State of Maine Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages for 10 years and then worked at her husband’s accounting practice for several more years until her decision to stay home and raise her family.
Winona was predeceased by her parents; husband, Harold L. Jones; and sister, Edwina Gray.
She is survived by daughter, Karen Jones of Brunswick; son, Alan Jones and wife Dawn King-Jones of Sidney; grandchildren, Steven Jones and partner Sue of Portland, Kevin Jones and wife Katie of Portland, Elizabeth Jones of Busan, So. Korea; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Browne of Augusta, Bethany Browne of Bath, and Stephen Browne of Winterport; niece, Sandy Raines, husband Tom and son Thomas of Maryland; and great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kolby, Alana and Atreyu.
A funeral reception will be held for family and friends of Winona 11:30 a.m., Sat., Nov. 9 at The Governor Hill Mansion (Columbus Hall), following a brief family interment service at Fairview Cemetery in Jefferson.
