Winton “Winty” O’Brien Jacobs, 81, of Damariscotta, passed away on the morning of Nov. 10. Winty was born on May 13, 1931 in Damariscotta Mills, the son of Gertrude Feltis Jacobs and Paul Jacobs.
He attended Franklin Elementary School, graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1950, and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. In August of 1951, he married Jo-Ann Waltz of Damariscotta, and they lived in England for several years while he was stationed there during the Korean Conflict. When they returned from England, Winty attended the New England College of Pharmacy in Boston, and graduated in 1960. He then began his life-long career as a pharmacist at his father-in-law’s store, Waltz Pharmacy, in Damariscotta.
Winty was known for his sense of humor, friendly spirit, and willingness to help others. He was a fixture in the Damariscotta business community until his retirement earlier this year.
He was a member of the Damariscotta Baptist Church and served on the diaconate board. Winty was also an active member of the Maine Pharmaceutical Association, and the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary. He served on the GSB Sanitary District, the Damariscotta-Newcastle School Board, and the ElderCare Board. He greatly enjoyed being a member of Jake’s Rangers and the Route 66 Snowmobile Club. During pharmacy college, he served as President of the Delta Sigma Theta fraternity.
Winton is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jo-Ann; daughter, Christie and partner Kimberly Malone of Golden, Col.; son, Dean and wife Sarah Plummer; and beloved grandsons, Benjamin and Christopher of Damariscotta; six of 11 siblings, Paul and Bradley Jacobs, Polly Dalton, Patricia Hagar, Mary Gilman and Linda Simmons.
Visiting hours 4-7 p.m., Fri., Nov. 23 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Celebration of his life 1 p.m., Sat., Nov. 24 at the Damariscotta Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen E. Vaughn officiating.
