The area is teaming with wildlife this year, that is for sure. We have had a snapping turtle hanging around for a couple of weeks and are hoping that she laid her eggs on our loam pile. We have named her Winifred. She was hanging around our front step for a day or so and even ate some lettuce that I very carefully set near her.
I read that they have a combative disposition when out of the water and use their powerful beak like, strong jaws, and highly mobile head and neck as their defense. I give her a wide berth. We are hoping to see some baby turtles at some point heading for the stream behind our house.
Beware and be careful not to hit one of these prehistoric looking snappers along the side of the road as they look for a soft spot to lay their eggs.
We have also had a beautiful, healthy-looking gray fox prowling around. He also came up onto our front step. No doubt due to the fact that we have a family of chipmunks living there. He crossed the lawn into my fenced in garden area and explored the garden shed before moving along.
It is also a good year for the lightening bugs. Our fields are alight with them. Due to the wetness last year, we only saw them a couple of nights.
The Ro, the new pub at King Ro, had its official full bar opening on Friday. The place was packed, and I can attest that a good time was had by all. The service was great, and the food was fantastic. It is the new hot spot to be!
The Friday night dinner at King Ro this week will be chicken andouille gumbo with rice and pineapple upside-down cake. Call 529-5380.
There will be elections held in November for the four officers – president, vice, treasurer, and secretary – along with three board members for the Round Pond Village Improvement Society, better known as RPVIS. The association was organized in 1928 and owns and maintains the Round Pond landing and docks, the tennis courts, and lupine field.
Bill Russell held the position of president for approximately 25 years, Carroll Leeman for six years, and B.J. for close to 20. A nominee committee has been set up to accept information for anyone seriously interested in throwing their hat into the ring. Please leave information and contact info at rpvisnom24@gmail.com.
The lupine field has had a poor showing this year with only one or two lupines blooming. The field is deliberately left unmowed until well after the seed pods have dried up and dropped to the ground allowing for reseeding. Some years are just better for them than others and we will hope for a better show next year.
