Happy spring, everyone. We made it through another Maine winter. Although the calendar says March 20, Mother Nature could still have a few surprises left for us, but we know that winter is finally winding down. We will be complaining about black flies and too much traffic before we know it. The last few days, I have noticed that the male goldfinches have a few spots of bright yellow reappearing here and there on their winter plumage, and the purple finches are looking much brighter as well. We have also gained well over three hours of daylight. Time to plant the seedlings!
I have been reading Shirley Ross’ old Round Pond columns again and found one that is dated exactly 35 years ago. Funny how so many things have changed but a lot has stayed essentially the same.
Our thanks to Mike Nyboe who took down the swags and wreaths that have been hanging around since Christmas.
We welcome home Mr. and Mrs. Paul Leeman Sr., who have been soaking up the sunshine in Orlando, Tampa, and Sarasota. They report happy visits with Mrs. William Hall’s daughter, Cindy, and Dickie Hall, her son. Also Pammy, husband, and baby were there at the time.
We are sorry to report that Mrs. Clifford Leeman is a medical patient at LincolnHealth — Miles Campus.
Carroll Leeman has been painting at the home of Mrs. Irving Smith. That gal is getting a head start on housecleaning.
Folks at lower Round Pond have asked me to send best wishes to Brian and Ruth Etheridge on their second wedding anniversary, which will occur on March 23.
Further signs of spring: Mrs. Bertrand Collamore reports sightings of pussy willows. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Harris, of South Portland, were at their home here for the weekend.
Mrs. Loa Blake is employed at the doctors clinic in Waldoboro, which is located in the Waldo Theatre.
And here we are 35 years later wishing Ruth and Brian Etheridge a very happy 37th anniversary!
This Friday at King Ro Market, we will be serving meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a winter-harvest kielbasa soup. Both will be served with biscuits and salad. The desserts will be a chocolate torte or lemon cheesecake. It is hard to believe that we only have six more weeks before we will be halting the Friday-night dinners for the summer. We will resume again after Columbus Day. Our corned beef dinner on St. Paddy’s Day was a huge success, with many people partaking. We even had our very own leprechaun decked out in a green-velvet top hat and bright-green sequined shoes (thanks, Judy!).
Quote of the week: The optimist fell twelve stories: At each window on the way down he shouted, “All right so far.”
