From all of us at The Lincoln County News, congratulations to the class of 2017.
We know parents and teachers will bombard you with advice in the weeks and months to come, so we will keep ours short and to the point. We think you will like it.
Here’s our advice: when it comes to education or a career, do what you want to do.
Don’t listen to the doom and gloom.
We have firsthand experience with doom and gloom. Did you know newspapers are dead? Did you know you’ll never find work in journalism? Did you know you can’t run a successful business in Lincoln County? Did you know energy costs are too high? The workforce is too small? Too old? Doesn’t have the right skills?
We hear those things too. Yet we are a successful newspaper with a staff growing younger, not older, that seems to love living in Lincoln County. We report almost every week on some young person starting or growing a business in Lincoln County.
The same lessons apply to you as individuals.
Sometimes “common knowledge” turns out to be wrong. Did you know the Earth is flat?
Whatever your path, some stuffy professor or well-intentioned relative will make you question it.
But if you’re passionate about what you want to do, and if you work hard at it, we would bet on your success.
One more piece of advice: don’t waste time. Whatever you want to do, start today.
And whatever you do, stay in touch. Let us know what you’re up to, whether here or across the country or the world. We’ll pass it on.
Good luck!
