Fair season is here.
A Maine summer is not complete without a trip to the fair.
Lincoln County has not had its own fair for many years. Once there were fairgrounds on the site of what is now Hammond Lumber Co. in Damariscotta.
But some of Maine’s best fairs happen just beyond our borders.
The Union Fair will kick off Saturday, Aug. 18 and run through Aug. 25. The Windsor Fair takes over the next day, Aug. 26, and continues through Sept. 3. For a slightly different flavor, the Common Ground Fair will take place a few weeks later, Sept. 21-23, in Unity.
For details on the Union Fair, check out the insert in last week’s edition. The website mainefairs.org is another good resource for fair information.
Maine’s agricultural fairs are a wonderful tradition, a mix of junk food and carnival games with demonstrations and displays of the best our region’s farms have to offer.
Fair time always makes us a little sad, because we know when we’re at the fair, it’s just about time for school, and then eight months of shoveling snow (give or take).
All the more reason to make the most of the fair while it’s here. See you there!
