It is with gratitude and relief that we report, on this week’s front page, the survival of a Waldoboro police officer who was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance in the wee hours of Sunday, Jan. 22.
This scary incident serves as a reminder that our men and women in uniform place their lives on the line every day. It’s not just something politicians say when they give a speech to the police officers union. It’s reality. It takes real courage to be a police officer, even in rural Maine, and our officers deserve our thanks for their work to serve and protect us.
We do not know all the details of the incident Sunday and likely will not until the Maine Attorney General’s Office completes its investigation.
We do not need to know all the details to send our thoughts and best wishes to Officer John Lash in his recovery, physical and otherwise.
We also wish to express our sympathy to the family of the man who died in this incident and send his family our thoughts at this difficult time.
